Do People No Longer Know How To Cook???

I could hardly believe my eyes when a guy came through my register buying eggs similar to these. It takes 10 minutes to make boiled eggs so I don't understand the need to buy these. All you have to know is how to boil water to make boiled eggs.
Then there there are the pre-wrapped baking potatoes. One woman came in and bought 8 of them for a buck apiece. You can buy two 10 lb bags for that price! All you have to do is prick a potato with a fork and throw it in the microwave.
This is a new one. In case you don't know how to toast a bagel and spread some cream cheese on it, then this is your dream come true!
How hard is it to make mashed potatoes? Chop them, cook them and mash them. When did people forget how to do this?
This one speaks for itself. Considering how difficult it is to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, this is a lifesaver!
And this one as well.
I bought some of this pancake mix because it it was a good deal. Then I realized you had to add milk, oil and an egg. If I were to just add a tiny bit of sugar and baking powder, then I'd be making my homemade pancake recipe. For the same amount of time, I'd have pancakes that did not taste like a bunch of chemicals. Yuck. I find it sad that so many people these days don't know how to cook or care to learn how to cook. My mother never taught me to cook, I had to learn for myself. Anyone can learn. :)

  1. It's not so much they can't cook, it's that they can't be bothered to. People want what's going to save them time. I mean, why would they take the time to peel, cook and mash potatoes when they can just pay a little extra for someone else to do it for them? Personally I much prefer a home cooked meal. It's more work, yes. But it tastes better, and it's often cheaper to buy the items and make it yourself anyway. But the products are produced because people will buy them just to save themselves a few minutes of work. As long as that remains the case products like those will continue to be made, and sold, in large quantities.

  2. I have always laughed at those plastic wrapped baking potatoes in the store. As you said, some are too lazy or too dense to cook simple items,

  3. The sheer laziness of most people is mind-staggering as well as mind-boggling.

  4. Isn't it crazy how lazy society has become. Maybe it's not lazinesss just not enough time in the day. I buy the mac and cheese for the kids to cook as a snack and this weekend I found a just add water and shake bisquick panckae mix. the pancakes turned out relly good and it was only $1.77

  7. My husband is a bit lazy in the morning and I don't have time to cook for him since I leave at 6:15am for work and he doesn't have to be at work until 8am. So I get those kind of things for him so that he will eat...otherwise he will skip breakfast.

  8. I sit and look at this and shake my head, not only have some become lazy in our society, It makes me question the obeseity, cancer and of course the list of diseases could go on and on. Not to mention what becomes of all this garbage?? What a shame. It would not surprise me one bit that in some point and time we will have foods like the *jetsons era*

thanks for sharing this, what an eye opener!

  9. I think that one of the appeals of the egg (no pun intended) may be the lack of need to actually PEEL the egg. I've got NO problem hard boiling a load of eggs, and neither does my FIL, but the peeling of them gives us both fits. (And, he's starting to have problems with arthritis along with some circulation problems from pre/full-blown?/diabetis.) I can understand somewhat the appeal of peeled hard-boiled eggs. The potatoes...... *shaking head* That's just ridiculous! (Though, again, I can understand the appeal of the mashed potatoes, as it CAN be a time-saver, until you factor in how long you've got to work to afford to buy the plastic tub little bit of potato inside. Do I want to work for half an hour JUST to pay for some tiny portion of mashed potatoes? Not so much!)

You're right though, as is Tori.... Between folk's inability to cook, and lack of desire to try...... It's really pretty shameful, and I wonder what my grandmothers would say about the laziness rampant in our current culture.
