Thoughts of long ago

This freezing cold weather reminds me of how it was when I was growing up in MA. When I was in elementary school the girls were only allowed to wear dresses to school, no pants whatsoever. So I'd trudge off to school thru the woods (I really did walk thru the woods as a shortcut!) with my dress on, knee high boots, hat, scarf, mittens and thick knitted tights on my skinny, scrawny legs. In that part of New England the winter temperatures could easily be below zero and there could be 2 or 3 feet of snow on the ground.
I remember having to go out and play for recess no matter how cold it was and I was always freezing to death! You can bet we ran around like crazy to try to keep warm. I think it was around 4th or 5th grade they started letting us wear pants under our dresses. We had these ugly little stretchy stirrup type pants and we had to take them off and hang then on our hook (we had no locker) when we got to school. I still had those knitted tights on underneath and shall we say static cling as we took off those pants? Well at least it was a bit warmer than just the tights.
Then in 6th grade something amazing happened. We were allowed to wear pants to school! Any time we wanted, not just in the winter. We were even allowed to wear jeans as long as they were not cut off on the bottom or had holes in them.
These days I rarely wear dresses at all. I can't remember the last time I wore one. Oopps I did wear one to a wedding just over a year ago. I'm just more of a blue jeans kinda girl.
Have a peace filled day.

  1. Wow! What kind of a school did you go to??? Growing up in Hawaii, I never wore shoes until I got into a private school, and then, we didn't have to on Fridays. I do remember wearing bikini bottoms made and sold especially to cover our panties under dresses so we could run around at recess.
