Soup For A Cold Winter Day

I rarely use recipes while cooking soup and I made this one up as I went along. I had a hambone with some meat on it in the freezer leftover from Thanksgiving. This was served with garlic bread.

Split Pea Soup
1 hambone with meat on it
2 onions, chopped
1 bag of dried split green peas
1 lb carrots, chopped
2 potatoes, chopped
garlic powder, salt and pepper, to taste
3 chicken bouillon cubes

Cover one ham bone (with some meat on it) with two quarts of water (in a large stockpot) and add in the 2 onions . Bring to a boil then turn down a bit and cook for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. While this is cooking take one bag of split peas and put in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil then turn off and let soak for the time the hambone is cooking. Add in with the ham bone the split peas, carrots, spices and bouillon cubes. Add more water if necessary to make sure there is enough broth. Cook for 1 hour on medium. Add in the potatoes and cook another 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Add more spices if necessary. Serve with garlic bread or better yet, homemade bread. Yummy.

  1. Ooooh, that soup looks like the perfect thing on a day like today. I wish my supper tonight was going to be so hearty & filling. (Though it's comfort food, it's not soup. It's going to be fried cabbage & keilbasa over buttered egg noodles.)

    Stay warm!!!!
